Origami Could Be The Solution To All Your Potting Problems

In the same way hermit crabs move from one shell to the next as they grow, houseplants must do the same. That requires you to know just when your growing greenery needs a swap and which planter suits it (and your decor) best. In other words, growing trees indoors is hardly a low-maintenance task. So, London-based Studio Ayaskan has come up with a way to eliminate one major step: planters that grow with your plant.

The design firm's new concept is called GROWTH, and uses an origami-like technique that allows the pot to expand with the plant. As pressure mounts from inside the planter, folds begin to open up, increasing the pot's capacity. In total, the planter is capable of becoming up to four times larger than its original size. And they're quite stylish, too.

But if you're looking for a flower solution that requires absolutely no green thumb, this isn't it. While there's no need for re-potting, the planter isn't completely self-sufficient. Your plant will still need to be watered, and soil has to be added as the pot expands.

And, those looking to purchase the GROWTH planter will have to wait. The product is still in the prototype phase, though Studio Ayaskan is planning to produce it sometime in the coming months.
