Breeding history

Cherry "Abundant" managed to get as a result of the choice of planting material from freely pollinated Michurin varieties, which were transferred at the age of one year from the AB and VNIIG. The originator of the variety is the Gardening Plant Breeding Station in the Sverdlovsk Region (Russia). In the Volga-Vyatka and Ural regions, the variety was included in the State Register in 1992.

Did you know? The territory of the “ancestors” of today's cherry is considered to be the territory of modern Iran, where the possessions of ancient Persia were once located. Nevertheless, according to other historical data, it also grew in the territories of the Caucasus.

Description of the bush

Shrubs "Abundant" cherry nobody calls compact, because in height they can reach up to three meters, although most often do not exceed a height of 2.5 m. At the same time, they have a small oval crown, with an average thickness, as regards the formation of shoots , and the formation of leaves.

The oval buds on the shoots are slightly deviated to the side and reach a length of 3.1 mm. Upstairs, they are pointed, and at the base are narrowly wedge-shaped, with a double-crested serration. The leaves are slightly concave, glossy, with 2-4 glands at the base. The length of the light green petiole is 9 mm with a thickness of 1 mm. In the inflorescence, there are 4-7 flowers, and the diameter of the flat corolla reaches 19 mm. All petals are placed freely, painted white. The stigma of the pistil (its length is about 9.5 mm) is above the anthers.

The calyx has a goblet shape, with an average serration of the sepals. Fruiting of this variety occurs on the bouquet branches in a one-year growth.

Description of berries

This variety gives rounded fruits weighing 2.5-3 g (reach 15 mm in length and 16 mm in width). They are slightly flattened from the side of the seam and rounded at the top. The color is dark red, with almost the same red flesh inside the cherry.

The length of the stem is 28 mm with a thickness of this part of 0.78 mm. Inside there is a round-oval bone, the mass of which is 0.21 g (that is, 7.5% of the total mass of the fetus). In the upper part it is narrowly rounded, and its base is somewhat wider than the top. Bone separation from pulp is medium. In the fruits of cherry varieties "Izobilnaya" are dry soluble substances (in the amount of 13.1%), sugar (about 7.9%), acids (1.7%), ascorbic acid (approximately 14.1 mg / 100 g) and Vitamin P (341.6 mg per 100 g). Externally, the fruit is estimated at 4 points. The taste of the flesh is juicy, sweet-sour.

When tasting freshly picked fruit, it is quite possible for them to put 4 points. When separated from the stalks, they remain dry, which means that they will not sap so quickly during transportation.

Fruiting

Fruiting cherry "Izobilnaya" begins only in the 3-4th year after planting a young plant, but in the future it brings a fairly high yield every year.

Important! By performing regular anti-aging pruning, you can extend the life of a cherry in this variety to 30 years.
Maximum fruiting can be expected closer to 8-10 years, after which it remains high.

Flowering period

Given that the cherry "Abundant" refers to late-ripening varieties, it is easy to guess that it blooms later. So, you will see flowers on it not earlier than the end of May or the beginning of June.

Gestation period

It will be possible to remove the fruit no earlier than the second half of August, and it will not be possible to collect everything at once, since the cherry tree is not characterized by simultaneous ripening.

Yield

With one medium bush under favorable growing conditions, you can get more than 10 kg of crop, but this applies only to those plants that have been successfully grown in your garden for more than 8-10 years.

Transportability

Variety "Abundant" is characterized by a fairly good keeping quality, so the harvest can be safely transported.

Disease and Pest Resistance

Like other fruit trees, the described cherry from time to time suffers from the invasion of pests and pathogens, as it has an average resistance to them. Most often, the plant is affected by fungal ailments: coccomycosis and moniliasis, although cherry aphid and slimy sawflies often damage normal development.

Nevertheless, despite these facts, experts recommend this variety for growing in private gardens, and for obtaining fruits on an industrial scale.

Did you know? The cherry fruit contains a substance melatonin, which is an excellent help in the fight against insomnia. Just eat a few handfuls for the night, and you will notice how much easier it will be to sleep.

Winter hardiness

A characteristic feature of the described variety is its high winter hardiness. It was noted that even in the most frosty winters neither wood nor kidneys suffer, and because of the late formation of flowers, cherries do not fear spring frosts.

Use of berries

Like the fruits of many other varieties, the harvest of cherries "Abundant" can be used fresh, although it is more suitable for creating preservation (juice or jam) or it is used for baking. A good taste is different and compote of these berries, which, by the way, can also be closed for the winter.

Advantages and disadvantages

Usually, the benefits of fruit trees are many, and the cherry of the described variety is no exception. However, do not forget about the shortcomings of its cultivation, which for some gardeners can cause the search for any other plant.

pros

The main advantages of growing this particular variety include its high frost resistance, good yields, self-fertility and late flowering, which allows the plant to protect itself from possible spring frosts.

That is, if you are not in a hurry to collect the fruits, then this option is definitely worth your attention.

Minuses

Speaking about the shortcomings of the "Abundant", first of all, it is worth highlighting the small size of the fruit, as well as their fairly late and not simultaneous ripening. True, if you are not engaged in the mass sale of berries, this fact should not embarrass you, since the consumption of a fresh crop is stretched in time.

Important! If, for example, apricots or peaches can still “reach” after a break, then it is better not to hope for it with cherries and remove only well-ripe fruits from the tree.
The variety "Abundant" is a good option for a summer cottage, especially for colder climatic zones, but if you are more interested in large and early cherries, then you should consider other possible options.
