Weigela is a genus of deciduous shrubs of the Honeysuckle family with bell-shaped flowers of pink, yellow, cream, brick, white and dark red flowers, and the color can vary depending on the flowering phase.

The bush blooms twice a year: from mid-May to mid-June and from mid-August to the first cold snap in September. The lush and long flowering makes the weigela a great choice when designing the landscape.

The genus includes from twelve to fifteen species of shrubs. In the nature of our latitudes, three wild species are represented, on the basis of which nine ornamental species are derived. In this article we look at the most popular types.

Hybrid

A richly blooming hybrid weigela reaches one and a half meters in height. For the design of their site gardeners often use it hybrid varieties. The color of the inflorescences depends on the hybrid variety:

  • "Red Prince". The shrub of this variety has rich red flowers. The bush is quite compact, therefore it is well suited for planting in groups in small areas;
  • "Eva Ratke" - Breeding variety bred by crossing the Korean and flowering weigela. Bushes small, grow to a meter. The flowers are glossy, dark red;

  • "Debussy" - the most early flowering variety of the hybrid species of weigela. It has small red flowers;

Maksimovic

The plant is originally from Japan. The size of the perennial Weigela Maksimovich is relatively average, one and a half meters high. The bush blossoms with yellowish bell-shaped flowers from mid-May to mid-June.

Middendorf

This species of weigela is found in coniferous forests, it blooms twice a year with flowers of yellow color with orange spots and dots. As an ornamental shrub looks spectacular with a group landing.

Korean

Luxurious shrub up to five meters. The domesticated bush grows up to one and a half meters. The leaves are glossy on top and hairy below. The flowers are able to change color: from the time of flowering, they are pale pink, and in the period of violent flowering - carmine.

Flowering occurs two weeks later than in other species, and lasts about a month.

Nice

Weigela with such a sonorous name is common in Primorye, on the Kuriles and Sakhalin.Wild-growing shrub is almost not cultivated, therefore in the middle lane most often the seeds in the boxes do not ripen.

Also blooms twice in summer with pink-purple flowers, 3 centimeters in diameter. The height of the bush is relatively small - from a meter to one and a half.

Early

Sadovaya
