Located just 35 miles from Paris, virtually unspoiled and uninhabited yet easily accessible, Fontainebleau was the ideal site for the birth of plein air painting in France. This exhibition transports viewers to the Fontainebleau of the 1820s through the 1870s as it traces three generations of painters who sought the natural landscape as their studio. Barbizon painters such as Henri Rousseau and Gustave Courbet as well as young Impressionist painters such as Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley are represented.
