Experienced gardeners know: if you correctly organize the proper watering of your garden, you can not only save the grown greens and fruits from many troubles, but also greatly increase the amount of the future harvest. Today we will talk about a culture that is rather demanding of moisture, which by nature has a weakened root structure and needs abundant irrigation during specific periods of its development. How often it is necessary to water garlic useful for our health, further in the article.

When to start watering
Watering garlic shooters is usually carried out at the very beginning of the growing season (April-May) or during the intensive growth of the bulbs (winter varieties - May, spring - July), but at the same time the place of planting of this plant, the characteristics of its cultivation in the greenhouse ground.
Indoor
For the successful cultivation of garlic plants in greenhouse conditions (protected ground), it is necessary to adhere to all time-tested recommendations that are used from year to year by knowledgeable summer residents and gardeners. If we talk about watering, it should be abundant and strengthened during the period of active growth of garlic, and since there is no possibility of natural rain irrigation in the greenhouse, it is necessary to moisten the vegetable as soon as the soil dries out, every 7-10 days.
In the open ground
Watering garlic in the open ground is carried out as the soil dries. In dry weather, humidification should be abundant, approximately 12–15 liters per square meter. In mild, warm weather, the approximate water flow should be 5 liters per square meter. Naturally, during regular rains, water procedures should be completely abolished.
Ways
In addition to the standard manual method of watering, there are two more equally popular ones: sprinkling and drip irrigation.
Sprinkling
Sprinkling provides an even and more accurate distribution of moisture over the soil surface, and also contributes to the settlement of irrigation rates. A significant disadvantage of this technology is the probable spread of diseases to vegetable garlic crops due to the abundant evaporation of liquid from the soil surface. And if in the process of sprinkling, to exceed the rate of irrigation, it can lead to secondary salinization of the soil, which is absolutely not suitable for high-quality cultivation of products.
Drip irrigation
Currently, drip irrigation is the best and most commonly used method that allows you to deliver liquid exactly to the root system of garlic, as well as to distribute the water to the plants as much as possible and evenly. But there is also a lack of such equipment - expensive equipmentTherefore, the scheme of growing crops must be clearly calculated and executed in the necessary volumes in order to be able to recoup all costs.
Irrigation features
In order to provide the vegetable with proper moisture according to all the rules and to understand whether it is possible to water the garlic at a certain time, it is necessary to learn some simple features:
- irrigation should not be carried out if the average daily air temperature falls below 13 ° C;
- liquid for irrigation should be warm enough, not below 18 ° C;
- the most favorable time for the procedure is the early morning or the time after sunset;
- after each watering of the bed it is recommended to loosen it 2 cm deep.
At the beginning of growth
At its very first growing season (from germination of the seedlings to the formation of chives), garlic needs good moisture, even though an overabundance of moisture can damage it.Therefore, at the beginning of growth, the plant should be abundantly moistened to a depth of 30 cm every 7-8 days. The first time you need to water with dressing in early May.
When ripe
There is also a specific answer to the question whether garlic is poured on ripening onion. Approximately in July-month, when the onion is ripening intensively in garlic, watering is gradually reduced and by August is completely over, as water is able to inhibit the growth of the onions, affects their further storage and greatly reduces the content of useful substances in them.
Before harvesting
Many newcomers are often interested in the question of whether to water the garlic just before harvesting - yes, it is necessary to do this, but at different times (depending on the goals of cultivation). For example, for future storage of fruits, watering should be finished 20 days before harvesting, and for processing in raw form, about a week.
How to measure the soil moisture of garlic
In order to always arrange garlic plantings "bath days" in a timely manner, some gardeners use a special device (moisture meter) to measure the soil moisture. If the moisture level that the moisture meter indicates is less than 70%, then garlic already needs watering.
You can also use the old and proven method for years without using any devices - for this you just need to take a handful of land from the depth of the ground (10 cm), squeeze it, and then open your palm and check the result.
- The outline of the fingers on the coma - humidity 70%;
- Lumping coma - 60%;
- Flowing liquid on coma - more than 80%.
- The soil does not form in whom - 60%;
- On loamy soil, a viscous lump of dense structure is more than 90%;
- A dense ball is formed, from which a palm gets wet when pressed, - 80%;
- The ball is formed, but then collapses when pressed - 70-75%.
