What is a highlander?

One of the most numerous and diverse ornamental plants is the mountaineer, there are more than 300 of its species. It is an annual or perennial plant, in the form of a shrub, grass or creeper, blooming or not. It occurs everywhere. Alpine

In nature, found in the steppes and mountain meadows. It has branched stems up to 1.5 m high, strongly creeping rhizome and lance-ovate foliage.

Fruit - a three-edged shiny nutlet of brown color. It blooms in July - August, ripens in September. Very unpretentious and aggressive, which earned the name of a decorative weed. Other names of alpine mountaineer: Bashkir cabbage, alpine buckwheat.

It grows on rocky slopes. Reaches 30-40 cm in height.

The plates of the bract are rather rigid, with the edges curled downwards and of various shapes. Loose narrow inflorescence with white or pale pink perianth. The fruit is 3 mm in size, triangular. It blooms from June to August.

Capitate

Strongly branching, one-year, creeping, quickly closes the soil. Stems reach 10-15 cm. Small leaves have reddish stripes and spots.

Sakhalin

Perennial plant with stems up to 3 m green or brown color. Cream-whitish flowers, collected in paniculate inflorescence. It bears fruit.

The fruit looks like a dark brown nut, triangular shape. Leaves reach 20 cm in width and 30 cm in length. It blooms about 1.5 months from July to August. Highlander Sakhalin has another name - Sakhalin buckwheat.

Candle

Bush in height reaches 0.8-1.2 m, perennial. The decoration is scarlet inflorescences, which appear in early July and bloom until the end of August.

The foliage is wide, green, by the autumn becomes yellow. As the roots grow slowly, the mountaineer looks like a compact bush. Highland candle has many varieties with different colors: white, crimson, pink, scarlet.

Virginia

Half-shrub 50 cm high. It blooms with white-green flowers. It has several varieties, and accordingly, different color of leaves.

For example, on yellowish-green leaves - red-brown spots or motley with white stripes and black-red marking. Despite the inexpressiveness of flowers, this look looks very bright due to the leaves.

Lingonberry

The homeland of this mountaineer is the Himalayas. Creeping perennial grass, reaching a height of 15 cm. Forms large groups.

Blooms buds of small pink flowers, reaching 6 cm in length, in August - September. Frost-resistant, but protection against moisture is necessary.
