Old Hollywood star Greta Garbo's summer home on the Swedish island of Ingarö is up for sale.
The seven-bedroom house was built in 1929 in the midst of the Baltic Sea, and sits on a roughly 115,500-square-foot plot along the beach. The interiors have been updated, and the house is now peak hygge. The rooms of the yellow, Scandinavian-style home flow into one another with white walls, wood floors, and multiple fireplaces warming the home.
The ground floor features a living room, library, and TV room, as well as a modern kitchen. The floor opens up to a French balcony with lake views.
Upstairs, the master bedroom has a walk-in closet with skylight and ensuite bathroom. In the basement, there is a sauna, laundry, and guest bedroom that was formerly Garbo's games room. An ornate relay wraps around the wall of the room, and tells the story of Gustav Vasa, the king of Sweden in the 1500's.
The estate also comes with a brewing facility, garage, and two smaller outbuildings.
The island home is located just outside of Stockholm, where Garbo was born. She began acting after working in a department store as a teen following the death of her father, appearing in advertisements and eventually going on to study at a Swedish drama school until famed Swedish director Mauritz Stiller pulled her out for the lead role in The Saga of Gösta Berling in 1924.
From there, Garbo enjoyed a luminous career in Hollywood, but retired to a quieter life after WWII - jet-setting from her NYC apartment and maintaining an air of mystique until her death in 1990.
The star's NYC apartment of 40 years at 450 East 52nd Street sold recently for $8.5 million - 43 percent more than its asking price of $5.95 million. Unlike this lakeside retreat, however, the condo was largely unaltered from Garbo's day - a major pull to bidders, agents said.
