Arugula: one name - two plants. How to distinguish
If you already have experience in growing arugula, you may have noticed that plants grown from seeds with the same name could be different in appearance and taste, or different names of plants could appear on the packaging next to the name of one variety. Confusion may arise with the appearance of the picture. Everything is explained simply: under the name of "arugula" two cultures are hidden.
The commercial name that came to us from Italy is today actively used in trade (in stores, on packaging, in catalogs), among vegetable growers, in cooking. In the special botanical literature, another name is used - Indow sowing campaign, or eruka sowing campaign (from the name in Latin). This plant belongs to the Indus genus of the Cabbage family and is arugula cultivated.
Inda plant annual, prostrate, reaches a height of 30-60 cm, is characterized by broad lyre leaves with jagged edges. Inflorescence - a rare long brush. The flowers are light, almost white with purple veins, sometimes yellowish or cream. Small, light brown seeds of arugula, similar to mustard seeds, are arranged in two rows in a pod 2-3 cm long. Green arugula has a spicy-spicy taste.
Thin leaf leaf - a perennial lodging plant 40-70 cm tall, belonging to the genus Cabbage.This plant, which is rarely used in our country, is grown as a leafy lettuce culture with the commercial name "Arugula Wild." It is characterized by narrow leaves with more dissected. The flowers are yellow, with time - orange. The seeds are very small, similar to poppy seeds, placed in two rows in pods 2.5–4 cm long. Greens taste more pungent than those of the Indo.

In the State Register of plant varieties suitable for distribution in Ukraine, only 2 varieties are registered, but nevertheless the seeds of many varieties of Russian and European selection can be found on sale. In Russia, 30 varieties of indow are registered.
Ukrainian selection: healer and Lybed
In 2008, the first variety of domestic plant breeding Indau was introduced into the State Register of Plant Varieties suitable for distribution in Ukraine - the Witch Doctor created at the experimental station "Mayak" of the Institute of Vegetable Growing and Melon Melon Growing of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine (Chernihiv region), where certified arugula seeds. This is an early ripe variety, the first shoots appear on the 5-6th day, from the shoots to harvesting takes 27 days. The stem is straight, with a very thick planting can be bent. A sprout is characterized by weak anthocyanin staining. The leaves have a width of 6-10 cm and a length of 23-25 cm, moderately intense green. In the outlet is 5-7 leaves. The flowers are white, with a diameter of 2.2-2.5 cm with purple veins. The yield of 1-1.3 kg / sq. The variety is suitable for cultivation in thickened crops and under conditions of mechanized technologies. It is recommended for implementation in all zones of Ukraine.
In 2014, the Lybed variety was registered by the Kiev enterprise "NK ELІT". This early variety of arugula pleases the first harvest within 20 days after germination. The growing season is 95 days. The outlet has about 10 long leaves of moderate green color without pubescence and wax shine, the first sheets are not dissected. The average yield of arugula Lybid is 2.5 kg / sq. m This variety of arugula is characterized by high yield and resistance to bolting. Poker
The most popular variety of Indow is Poker, registered in 2005 by the Research Institute for Vegetable Growing in Protected Ground (Moscow) and the breeding company Gavrish. This early Russian variety is valued for its excellent taste and is recommended for salads and side dishes for meat and fish dishes. From germination to cut the greens takes 20-25 days. Branched stalk of arugula "Poker" reaches a height of 40-80 cm. The strongly dissected green leaves form a rosette 18-20 cm high. In a protected ground, the rosette consists of 12 leaves, in the open ground - 20-28. Arugula Flower Poker - pale cream. The yield of the variety is 1-1.3 kg / sq. m. The variety is suitable for conveyor cultivation in the summer.
Sicily
The mid-season Russian variety Sicily is entered in the register in 2006 by the Scientific-Production Company "Russian Seeds". Greens of this variety have a pronounced nutty flavor and aroma. The leaves can be eaten 27-30 days after emergence. The plant grows 60 cm high. Cold-resistant (brings frosts down to -6 ºС), but does not tolerate heat, during droughts it starts up arrows. Rococo
Broad-leaved variety of Russian breeding Rococo was registered in 2006 by the company "Semko-Junior". The variety is early ripening: greens ripen for 20-25 days. It has a sharp taste and strong aroma. The green leaves of medium size are slightly jagged along the edge, gathered in a socket with a height of 12-18 cm and a mass of 20-25 g. The flowers are white. Corsica
Mid-season variety Corsica was created by the Russian seeds scientific research company and Euro-seeds company in 2006. Greenery becomes edible for 30-32 days from germination. The semi-raised rosette of leaves reaches a height of 62 cm. The narrow leaves have a smooth surface, green color and a lyre form with a notched edge. The flowers are white with a shade of pink. Koltivata
Dutch variety Koltivata entered the register in 2015. It is early ripening: greens can be eaten for 20-25 days. Large green leaves are strongly dissected and make up a rosette 10-15 cm high. The yield of green 2.4 kg / sq. m, the mass of the plant - 40 g This variety of arugula has a strong aroma and a sharp nut-mustard flavor, its juicy leaves are rich in essential oils and healthy substances. The variety is suitable for cultivation in the open and closed ground.
Curiosity
The mid-season variety Indow Dovkina was registered in 2010 by the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Vegetable Industry and the agricultural company Poisk. The semi-raised, 18–20 cm high rosette consists of medium green leaves of a lyre form with a smooth surface. A curiosity flower is creamy with brown veins. Plant weight - 18-20 g. Green yield - 1.7 kg / sq. The variety is resistant to cold, loves moisture, preserves its nutritional quality for a long time and starts the arrow late.
Spartacus
This early variety with a spicy taste appeared thanks to the agrofirm "Sedek" in 2012. Greens ripen 24-28 days. The plant reaches a height of 70 cm and a mass of 20-25 g. Victoria

Rocket
The Moscow company "LANS" registered the mid-season Rocket variety in 2006. Rocket greens can be eaten in 28-30 days. The semi-raised rosette of leaves reaches a height of up to 60 cm and a mass of 15-20 g. Medium narrow leaves have a smooth surface, a bright green color, a dissected form with teeth along the edge. Solitaire
This early ripe variety appeared in 2007 thanks to the Scientific-Research Institute of Vegetable Growing of Protected Soil and the breeding company Gavrish and is quite popular. Solitaire is a cold-resistant variety that can winter in open ground and in early spring to give greens. Its ripening period is 25 days.The semi-raised rosette of leaves has a height of 18–20 cm and the mass of a plant is 15–20 g. The leaves are medium in size and have a green, lyre-dissected shape with cuts along the edge. The flowers are yellow. Greens are very fragrant and have a strong nut-mustard taste, yield - 1.4-1.6 kg / sq. m. Can be grown in conveyor mode during the summer.
Taganskaya Semko
