These Are the Most Popular Diamond Shapes In The United States

Jewelry trends may come and go, but diamonds are forever. No matter the era, season or price tag, a diamond should truly be trend proof. While the 4Cs-cut, carat, color and clarity - have long been the main criteria in the world of diamond buying, they aren't the only thing to consider when making a purchase. Because yes, colored diamonds are increasingly popular (and record-breaking), and yes, vintage diamond rings are also having a moment, but the stone's shape is what really dictates a timeless and classic diamond.

In Maine, round diamonds account for 73 percent of all diamonds sold.

A new report appropriately titled "The Sparkle Rundown" by WP Diamonds recently revealed which diamond shapes are the most popular across the United States. The report, which included data from 2015 and 2016, also broke the findings down state-by-state to show exactly where each stone was the most popular.

The most popular diamond shape in the United States is round, which made up nearly 57 percent of all diamonds sold nationwide. Round diamonds have been a favored shape for decades, but the exact popularity varies state per state. In Maine, round diamonds account for 73 percent of all diamonds sold, but in Louisiana, round diamonds are a significantly smaller part of overall diamond sales at 47 percent, according to 2016 data.

The second most popular diamond shape is princess, which accounted for just over 21 percent of all diamonds sold in the United States. Princess diamonds were the most popular in Wyoming, where they made up 30 percent of all diamonds sold. The shape was the least popular in Washington, D.C., with princess's representing only 11 percent of diamonds sold.

While round and princess cut diamonds account for a vast majority of the diamonds sold, other shapes were popular in 2016. Marquise was the third most popular shape, accounting for 5.46 percent of all diamonds, followed by cushion and emerald, which accounted for 4.88 percent and 3.11 percent, respectively. Marquise diamonds have increased in popularity since 2015, when they were 4.8 percent of all diamonds sold. Additionally, emeralds have become less popular since 2015, when they accounted for 4.47 percent of all diamonds sold. Cushion cut diamonds have seen a slight increase in popularity, raising from 4.12 percent to 4.88 percent in 2016.
