Can You Guess America's Most Expensive ZIP Codes?

Get ready for a shocker: Lots of rich people live in Silicon Valley and Manhattan. America's most expensive ZIP codes, as calculated by Forbes in its annual list, are located in Northern California and very specific parts of New York City.

Using data from real estate analysts Altos Research, Forbes ranked the most expensive ZIP codes in America by calculating the median asking prices for single-family houses and condominiums listed on the market during a 90-day time period. They weighed areas with lots of condominiums lower, and did not include co-ops, which they say may have made certain New York City neighborhoods appear less expensive. And that's saying something, given how Manhattan dominates their list anyway.

The most expensive ZIP code on this year's list is 94027, located in tony Atherton, California. The Silicon Valley suburb, home to the tech world's elite, had a median asking price of more than $9 million. The rest of the top five belong to New York, with Manhattan specifically taking up three spots. Alpine, New Jersey and Aspen, Colorado also cracked the top 10, along with even more Manhattan neighborhoods, many of which are adjacent to one another.

Here are the top five most expensive ZIP codes, according to the magazine's list. You can see the full ranking of 500 ZIP codes on Forbes' website.

  1. Atherton, California (94027): Median home price of $9.03 million
