This Designer Celebrates the Well-Collected Home

Starting today, independent and world-renowned designers join together at the highly-curated pop-up shop, Thread, in Washington DC's Union Market. The progressive retail concept features a collection of showrooms from artistic minds showcasing innovative designs in everything from fashion to home.

"Thread is about celebrating great design and fostering growth among emerging and established entrepreneurs. it's all in the mix," says Jodie Mclean, President and Chief Investment Officer of EDENS, the retail real estate owners that redeveloped Union Market.

Amongst those showing at Thread is celebrated interior designer, Darryl Carter. His custom showroom features not only his highly edited and unique assortment of home goods but also a gallery for Brook Bronner, a local artist whose paintings show around DC.

An extension of his DC-based boutique, his exhibition focuses on creating a collected feel, "I want it to feel like an attic," says Carter. "It's like a treasure hunt and the larger space is part of that treasure hunt."

Inspired by the materiality and core of objects, Carter holds an affinity for all things design. From the structure of the space to the local crafts displayed, his showroom will embrace that thinking.

"Everything there is artisanal down to the infrastructure of the temporary space," explains Carter. "There is a shelving system I designed that is made of steel and concrete, so even the display is a one-off."
