Cineraria: flowers for home and borders

Cineraria also bears the name of the godson - the Astrov family, the homeland of South Africa, but is very popular in other territories with a different climate. The plant attracts attention with bright beautiful inflorescences and silvery original foliage. The genus of cineraria includes only a few species. While the ornamental varieties are a huge number, and they are all diverse. There is a division into: flowering and decorative leafy plants, the most popular of which we consider in this article.

Seaside (silver)

Silver Cineraria is a deciduous ornamental plant that will wonderfully decorate any home territory and flower bed. The leaf plates are thickened and cut into thin segments. The foliage itself is green, but covered with thick silver-ash soft villus.

The leaves along the entire stem length form a very dense rosette. Seaside cineraria is capable of blooming, but it does not look attractive. Small yellow baskets are not combined with foliage color.

Important! Silver groundsel in the open ground is better planted in late May, by this period the plant becomes stronger and able to withstand adverse weather conditions.
Popular varieties:

  • Silver dust - shrub with beautiful openwork foliage, short (up to 25 cm);
  • Cirrus - loose thickets with toothed oval sheets, reaches about 45 cm in height.
The seaside (silver) cineraria is also called cenecio or sea cineration.

Bloody

Groundsel bloody differs abundant bright blooms. The stems have strong branching, but are erect.

Stems as high as 70 cm, fully covered with openwork or oval leaves of a pronounced green color. From the second half of July, the bush is covered with a “cap” of bright attractive flowers of various colors.

This type is considered the most suitable for growing in room conditions, so it is also commonly called cineraria room or hybrid.

At your site you can also grow such ornamental shrubs as: bougainvillea, irga, Buddley David, euonymus, hydrangea paniculata and petiolate, spirea, geykhera, honeysuckle.
Popular varieties:
  • Double - ornamental shrub height of 35-70 cm, produces an elegant bloom.One flower with a diameter of about 5 cm, attracts attention by the fact that the petals are painted in two contrasting colors.
  • Grandiflora - height of dwarf shrubs from 50 to 70 cm, its flowering simple, large, in the form of a basket with a diameter of up to 8 cm;
  • Stellata - 70-90 cm tall, blooms in small baskets with narrow indigo color petals.

Graceful

Cineraria is elegant - Spherical shrub with very branched stems, reaches a height of 60 cm. On the stems and leaves a sticky pile is formed.

Inflorescences are terry and simple, in the form of baskets, grow in groups and form larger, scobaceous inflorescences on a single stem. Popular varietal decorative groups:

  • Ligulosus - bushes sredneroslye, have abundant double flowering of various colors and tones.
  • Nana - Multiple large blooms with burgundy core and pink petals, similar to asterisks. Height up to 25 cm, belongs to the group of low-growing.
Did you know? The scientific name of the godson in Latin - "senex",which means "bald", "old". The connection is that after maturation, the buds lose their petals and have "bald look.

Polynnolistnaya

The ground flower of a ragberry leaf consists of four-sided or triangular in cross-section stems that carry flower baskets of bright yellow color. Leaf plates collected in the rosette. The sheets are repeatedly dissected and resemble bright green threads. Photo of the Cenuranium.

Ivy-shaped

Groundsel ivy-shaped native of South Africa. The leaves are fleshy and juicy, differ in a rounded shape and dense arrangement on the stems that are in a hanging position. Paniculate inflorescences consist of many small baskets of a pale yellow color. This type of Cineraria is best grown in containers, on stony hills or at the edges of the curb.

Rowley

The Rattler / Cinerwort / Rowley is a tropical African liana, which is characterized in its classic sense by the absence of foliage.

It is a relatively unpretentious type of a krestovnik. Designed for indoor growing.

Important! For a good growth Rowley need a winter period of rest.
Cineraria will sooner or later be interested in a grower of any level, because its beauty and originality cannot be ignored. The varieties of the godson surprise with their unusual and decorative properties.

Did you know? In Ukraine, the largest flowerbed with a logo in the history of the city was opened in Kharkiv for Euro 2012, where silver cineraria was planted in combination with other colors.
There is evidence that the coastal cineraria is able to fully winter in the garden and, for three more years after planting, delight in its flowering.

And for beginners, experienced gardeners advise starting the cultivation of this plant by choosing an elegant gardener. In experienced gardeners there is a method of extending the flowering of a graceful groundflower by removing faded buds.
