An Hermès Birkin Bag Just Sold For A Record Price At Christie's

A hot pink Hermès Birkin bag just set a major record, becoming the most expensive purse ever sold at auction. The handbag went for $221,844 at Christie's handbags and accessories sale in Hong Kong on Monday, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Birkin's are famously sought after due to their French origins and limited quantities. And with the addition of diamonds and 18-karat white gold, the record-setting fuchsia version is even more luxurious than most.

The previous record holder for the most expensive bag sold at auction is also a crocodile Birkin bag with diamond detailing. It went for $203,150 at a Heritage Auctions sale in New York in 2011, and was red, not pink, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Just to put this $221,844 price tag in perspective, here are three other things your could buy with that much money.

  1. A two-bedroom house for less than $220,000.
  2. Three Range Rovers at $72,000 each.
  3. An extended stay in one of the world's most expensive hotel suites.

But, to each his own.
