A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Fabergé Egg Hunt

Starting this week, over 200 egg sculptures created by top artists and designers will be displayed across New York City during the world's largest egg hunt.

Diane Von Furstenberg, Ronnie Wood and Carolina Herrera are among the celebrated artists to construct the 2 ½ foot tall highly coveted egg sculptures that will be 'hidden' in public places around the city's five boroughs from April 1 to 26, 2014.

Sponsored by the iconic artist jeweler, Fabergé, the charitable event celebrates artistry and creativity while benefitting endangered wildlife and disadvantaged youth. In partnership with Sotheby's, the egg hunt will culminate with an auction of the collectible sculptures raising funds for "The Elephant Family" and Agnes Gund's "Studio in a School" foundations.

While the list of artists runs over 200 people long we had the chance to preview two of the sought-after eggs. Echo Design and Hellman-Chang give a behind the scenes look at the design and inspiration behind their egg.

Echo's Design, a leader in creating beautiful and innovative accessories and home goods, drew inspiration from a collection of scarves celebrating their 90 anniversary. The emphasis is put on beautiful color and their iconic butterfly print pattern. The butterfly design was transferred from the silk scarf to fiberglass by hand cutting and applying digitally printed butterflies onto black-lacquered paint.

"For over 90 years, we have drawn inspiration from nature and nothing is more magical than butterflies taking flight," says Echo Design. To bring the sculpture to life, the butterflies were also mounted to steel and welded onto beams to come off the top of the egg.

Hellman-Chang, the ultra-luxury furniture line based in Brooklyn, created their egg with the traveling, confident man in mind. Inspired by designer Eric Chang's own wardrobe, it's the Gentleman's Valise, complete with everything a man of style needs.

"The idea was to create a timeless luggage piece for the New York gentleman. It's a nod to our brand persona - contemporary and stylish, yet classic," says Chang. "Much in the same way our furniture pieces honor old-time craftsmanship with modern, sleek surfaces, the interior is adorned with cufflinks, bow ties and pocket squares - all timeless style necessities for the modern man."
